Ellen fiasco

A quick post on the Ellen DeGeneres fiasco.

Ellen was wrong to give the dog to someone else because of the contract that she stated she didn't read.

The rescue was wrong for many things. They didn't make her sign paperwork, apparently, didn't do a home check, didn't alter the dog prior to adoption (which is illegal in California, I believe). They also didn't handle the relinquishment of the dog well. There was some sort of weird standoff in the yard of the hairstylist, which can be seen here.

I can't comment on what the video says because it's not captioned. The rescue owner, Marina Baktis, owns Paw Boutique in Pasadena. I have no idea what kind of pet store that is, they have blocked their website. The Internet Archive let me down as well.

Ellen paid 600 bucks to adopt this mix (which I suspect came from a miller or pet store directly, you don't find that many Brussels Griffon mixes running around, and this one was just 4 months old. Perfect age to be dumped for lack of sales from a pet store). She spent a total of 3 grand on the adoption and training. Holy hell is that some expensive obedience training! I honestly don't see how a few weeks of obedience training can run almost 2500 dollars. I bet she also didn't give the dog enough time to learn to be with the cats, from what I understand she only had the puppy couple weeks or three weeks, max.

In this situation, given how lax the rescue was with the rules when they adopted the dog to Ellen, they could have waited and did a home visit on the home the dog was placed in by Ellen, instead of creating the PR fiasco they did. I wonder how soon their store is going to fail as a result of all this.

Some new info: Apparently, Iggy was the second dog from Mutts and Moms that they returned because it didn't get along with their cats, both dogs were puppies. And Ellen has supposedly adopted four dogs since 03, returning them all except Iggy. She really can't claim ignorance of the issue. I have some more info to add later.

I commented on the situation on my own blog. Ellen did not sign the agreement but her live-in girlfriend of many years, Portia deRossi, did. I would certainly let a spouse or live-in sign and would consider that adequate for the couple...I think most rescuers would.

Now, how a Brussels puppy came to be with a rescue is another story but I wouldn't fall over in shock if he chased someoone ELSE'S cat before Ellen's and got dumped already. It happens.

Not specifically defending the rescue - might be a bad one, might be a good one, I don't honestly know. I just think Ellen is whiny and full of it.

If a contract was actually signed, then Ellen sucks even more.

you call that a short post? Lol. I bet Ellen's Puppy PR nightmare is the hottest thing on the web right now. Too bad none of us has the inside info on the rescue, and where the puppy itself came from.
I know from experience it can take a long time to get pets to learn to live with each other. I'm a petsitting, and my dog has to learn to get along with other people's dogs, cats, chickens, you name it...it takes a while. But so far she hasn't killed anything :) People just need to learn some damn patience and how to set boundries for their animals. I agree that Ellen was WRONG to give the puppy away..I mean why couldn't she call the rescue and say "Hey, Pookie and Fluffy don't like each other, but I know these great people with these kids who'd love the puppy, do you mind interviewing them as an adopter?" doesn't seem that difficult to me.

I appreciate that Ellen cares, at least she's out there trying to promote adoption, etc. I think there are probably other people that have been through similar things (granted, not a wise way of going about finding a dog a home) and have been similarly upset, she just happens to be a celebrity. It doesn't make me think she's an awful person for overlooking a contract (who hasn't?) or for being a bit misguided about finding a good home for a dog (at least she realized it was a bad fit in her own home), she just went about it the wrong way. It happens, and I think it sucks for the two little girls who thought they were going to have a puppy that the dog was taken from them. It would have been prudent for their parents to follow up with applying to adopt the dog (did they? do we even know) if they really did want the puppy. Celebrities are human and thus aren't always rational when it comes to emotions, it happens. I refuse to "throw the baby out with the bath water" and think Ellen is an awful person for what happened, as she did TRY to do good, she just went about in the wrong manner.
Heck, one of the secondary reasons I adopted a dog from a high kill shelter in GA when I'm in MA is I _knew_ I wouldn't get through the screening process that, say, the MSPCA has. Why? Because my land lord's permission was conditional (no complaints from neighbors conditional) and that does not fly with many adoption groups. Am I responsible and had a back up plan to give my dog to a responsible rescue group if things didn't work out: yes. But one thing I've noticed in life is that many people don't think that second step ahead of what is here_and_now.

I also find Ellen one of THE all time most annoying people I have ever known- every now and again I happen across her stupid show and remember why exactly I c=don't like her.
This just about tops it all though.
Yes OK the rescue might have handled it better and are definitely contenders for "whacky Races" but how about the pot calling the kettle black??
Ellen has to be one of the all time whack jobs, surely??
I would never adopt a dog (the hint at what is happening here is in the word "adopt") or a cat to someone as "out there" and obviously unstable as she is.
Don't care if she is President (and let's face it that is more than possible...) she isn't suitable.

Irantfordays, IMHO I think your begging for bucks to take your dog home is lame. Pony up the bucks yourself or stay home. Sheesh!

Yes, I agree. No trolling for money on my blog, thanks.

When we were in Florida this summer, we found a beautiful stray cat that we wanted to rescue and bring home. No matter what we tried, we couldn't get past the airlines to do it. We called a local humane society and that's all we could do for the kitty.
Life's tough irantfordays. If you have animals, then budget the money for them. If you don't have the money to take them vacationing w/you or keep them in a kennel or have a petsitter come, then stay home. Don't whine about it, for God's sake! That's truly obnoxious!

Jax said...

who do you think petsits for the petsitter when they go on vacation? its called "I don't take long vacations". I feel for you, rants, but if all this trip is for is fun then I think you need to either dig under the couch cushions and find some spare change, or cut your v.c. short.
Now if there was some pressing life or death reason you HAD to ship your dog (She's stuck in cuba or something, or some dog eating country) you might have better luck raising funds.

I just find it hard to feel sorry for Ellen Degeneres here, but I generally have a hard time feeling sorry for celebrities who have more money than God.

An animal is not like a pair of shoes. If you sign a legal contract and adopt it, you can't just turn it into a hand-me-down at your own convenience. There is a reason why rescues have rules about giving an animal away to a new home without their knowledge--those animals are at a risk of falling into bad situations again if they're just passed along. What if the hairdresser had decided the dog didn't fit into her home either and gave it away to someone else who turned out to be a total jackass?
