Introduction

So, what exactly is a puppymill? For that matter, what is a backyard bred animal, aka BYB?

Everyone has their own definitions of it. The USDA requires "high volume breeders" to have a license, and they must have it if they produce a certain amount of puppies every year. I'll get into those regulations in another post. Probably the most accepted layperson's definition of a puppymill is someone who breeds a ton of animals every year, keeps them in cramped quarters, doesn't bother with veterinary care, constantly breeds bitches litter after litter, and really doesn't care at all about their "livestock". The animals to them are livestock, and not pets or potential pets.

A backyard breeder is someone who breeds on a smaller scale than a puppymiller. The smaller scale can be up to one puppy or litter less than the USDA standard. They can be breeding for a profit. They want to show the "miracle of life" to the kids. Their dog is such a sweet dog, they'd love to have a litter from her. It's a bit of side income, especially when they don't take the animals to the vets. They are too lazy to alter their animals, so they have litters as a result. A miller is in it for the money alone. A BYBer can have a greater variety of why they breed. The only true difference between the two are volume.

I may plan to talk about specific millers/BYBers here, as a critique. Show how you know you're getting a good breeder. Discuss health contracts, and what they really mean. Point out egregrious breeding practices. Talk about the overpopulation issue and what it really is, how to combat it, how things like CA's "alter all animals" is a misguided approach towards animal population control, and more things than I can list right now.

Feel free to offer suggestions for topics in the comments, and if enough people want me to help them figure out if a breeder is quality, I'd be happy to do that for them.

Brilliant start! Keep it coming!

I think if we (responsible dog people) can impress upon the public that these are *consumer* issues as well as humane ones it'll help reduce the number of poorly bred and socialized dogs out there.

Thanks for taking on this blog topic.

My favorite doggie "peeve" as a rescuer was when someone explained to me why they bought a puppy from a BYB. They were told that rescue dogs have health issues, are rejects, have something wrong with them and it was better to buy a purebred.

A close runner up are the fancy named hybrids created only to charge big $$ for mutts.....

My biggest pet peeve is men who won't get their dogs fixed...and the women that support them! I have more than one friend whose husband's dog or dogs are not fixed and they say they disaprove but they don't do anything about it. If it was me I would take the dog while they were at work and not tell them, then just wait until they noticed and say "why you are right dear, his balls are gone, I wonder what could have happened?"

One of these unfixed dogs is your common variety mutt. I am friends with the people who gave the guy the dog after their mixed breed dog had puppies. The people who had the puppies have no clue what went into making the mutt, but the guy who now owns him is breeding the dog to another mutt (which he got for free at walmart) and is trying to sell the puppies as moutain cur dogs. I am not sure what a mountain cur is but these dogs are not it! Oh yeah they also breed shit horses to shit horses! oh wait are we allowed to cuss on your blog? Sorry this really pisses me off. I am no longer friends with these people.

Men who don't want to geld (or neuter)??? Got an answer for 'em..... NEUTICALS!!

Yep, fake balls for guys. Look like the real thing. Just wait for hubby to take a trip or work overtime, get your vet to make a little sleight of hand substitution of neuticals for testicals and voila! No more breeding!!

PETSTORES who sell puppies!!! I hate them. Poor little inbred lonesome things, produced at puppy mills. I wish there was a campaign to educate Joe Public to the fact that the poor thigs are crap, and their lives are miserable. Puppies need to be played with and cuddled. So do their parents.

I also hate $200 dogs. Howz that going to cover the cost of shots, hips, eyes, and other vet bills of the parents?? Run away!!!

I am all for adopting from the pound or a rescue, but if one must buy a dog, do it right,...

I am so excited about this blog!
Ever since Fugly horse I've been looking around for a blog that covered irresponsible dog breeders.
I don't know what people think of this but my husband hunts with and breeds field trial/hunting Labs and we have about one or two (total) well planned litters a year from our 3 breeding age girls (we also have 2 old ladies and one youngster). Many have gone on to be Field Champions and most end up in hunting/family homes. We don't make any money on it (considering how much we spend on our dogs in general)but he is good at it and we love our dogs, and if one ever went unsold, we'd keep it forever, without question. Whenever I read about the irresponsible horrible breeders my heart just hurts.
Unfortunately people are told the worst sh-t. A co-worker asked my advice about breeding her out of control female (who was less than a year) because someone had told her it calms them down! My God!!! I calmly talked her out of it and suggested that spaying would be a good idea. I tell myself it's not that they're all bad people, they were just raised to believe weird things. And some poor dog suffers.

Congrats on the Blog, Moony!
Posted on Fugly, will post here too, I have a great example of the type of sad deformed creature that comes from the inbreeding practiced at large puppymills. I will definately get a pic of him for you this week. I swear there are only like five names on his entire pedigree. And some vet who needs to have his license taken away (Or else it was bogus and forged) actually signed off on this puppy and certified that he had no 'genetic deformities, including angular limb deformities or a heart murmur' at 12 weeks. I'm telling you you should have been able to see there was something wrong with this puppy at *8* weeks.
I have more puppy breeding horror and success stories (my relatives in florida let their unfixed dogs run amuck reproducing and can't get rid of the hideous mutt puppies they've created, while my mother in arizona makes sure she has homes for at least 5 puppies before she even thinks about breeding our Siberian huskies! {Sammy has never had more than 5 puppies, but we usually have more homes lined up anyway!})
Also, if you don't mind a suggestion, I think it'd be fab if you could scope out some breed specific rescue and adoption organizations and list them for us...my friends with the puppymill mastiff would either love some help with his medical problems, or to find him a new home if the time comes they can't care for him anymore.

Chester's Mom: I'm with you on the fancy schmancy 'crossbreeds'! I know a gal who paid 2500 dollars for a Golden Doodle. You can get one at the pound! We had a cockapoo when I was a kid, pound dog, just as nice and pretty as these MUTTS that folks are selling for buku bucks these days! Its crazy! I have a really cool "crossbreed" dog. Alright, she's a mutt. And I love her for it. She's half heeler and half great dane, try to poke a stick at THAT fancy schmancy dog breeders! And guess what? I got mine for FREE from a bunny cage in front of a feed store. I guess I got a good deal on my fancy schmancy crossbreed mutt dog!

Hi all, l used to breed quality silky terriers(showed em etc) but l had one of my girls end up in a bad way after having her litter and it put me off for life so everyone went to the vets and fixed up no more puppies. After the last of my 5 silkys went to heaven(old age) l decided l'd get my next best friend from the local pound(no idea what l wanted even) came home with a heinze variety who is now 15 years old and probably wont be with us much longer(l dread that day) so we have also taken on one kelpie that noone wanted due to being ugly but he's developed into a handsome sensible dog, and worse still we just got a mutt that will be giant sized(wolfhound/ridgeback) l was so angry when l saw the add that l asked the guy why the hell he bred them and someone had told him his bitch would be a better dog if she had one litter before being spayed. He was young and got the shock of his life when she produced 11 puppies, he got lucky although l am not sure the puppies did(apart from mine) and all found homes BUT l believe most went to unsuitable homes with pighunters who will not care for them properly will kick them and illtreat them etc and then one day they will die from a punctured lung after being hit by a boar. The breeder does NOT intend breeding his bitch ever again thank god.As lve said on FHOTD a little education can go a long way so go for it with your page!
